THE HISTORY OF SEN-NO-RIKYU ,

SAN-SENKE TEA  HOUSES

Omotesenke (表千家 "front Sen house/family")

is the name of one of the three houses or families ()

that count their family founder as Sen no Rikyū and are

dedicated to carrying forward the Way of Tea that he developed.

The other two are

Urasenke (裏千家) and Mushakōjisenke.武者小路千家 .

The three are together referred to as

the san-Senke (三千家; "three Sen houses/families").

The  hereditary name of the head (iemoto) of this line of the family is Sosa The Omotesenke estate,

known by the name of its representative tea room,

 the "Fushin-an" (不審庵),

was where Sen Rikyū's son-in-law, Sen no Shōan,

re-established the Kyoto Sen household after Rikyū's death.

It is located on Ogawa street in the Kamigyō ward of Kyoto.

Shōan's son Sōtan soon succeeded as the family heir and head of this estate.

The next heir to the estate and family tradition was Sōtan's third son, Kōshin Sōsa,

counted as the fourth generation in the Omotesenke family line.

Sōtan, when he was ready to retire and gave the headship of the family over to Kōshin Sōsa.

He established his retirement quarters on adjacent property in the north, building a tiny tea room there, the "Konnichi-an" (今日庵).

Eventually, Sotan's youngest son, Senso Soshitsu, inherited that part of the estate, which came to be known as the home of Urasenke.

There are small stylistic differences between the three schools.

For example, the Omotesenke school whisks the tea less than the Urasenke school, creating less foam on the top of the tea.

Also, Omotesenke uses a susudake chasen, or darkened-bamboo tea whisk,

while Urasenke uses untreated bamboo for its chasen or tea whisk.

The Fushin-an estate, where the 3rd generation, Sōtan, lived until retirement, is the home and headquarters of Omotesenke.

The Kitayama Kaikan in Kyoto is a relatively modern Omotesenke facility,

where Omotesenke sponsors exhibitions, lectures,

and other educational programs for the general public.

What was the origin of the Sakura-cherry tree appreciation festival in Japan ?

It is said that the origin of "Hanami”, the Sakura-cherry tree appreciation festival, started in the Nara Period when ornamental plum trees from China were introduced into Japan for the nobility.
Then, from the Heian period, the object of admiration changed from the plum tree to the cherry tree.
The Shogun (Lord) Tokugawa Yoshimune planted cherry trees all over what was then called Edo (Tokyo today).
His purpose in encouraging cherry blossoms was to eliminate the frustration of ordinary people in their everyday lives
by lifting individuals souls with their beauty, and this benefit continues in today's
modern world.
Japanese people today often have an emotional attachment to the cherry blossom because it reminds them of the time of school graduation (normally in March) when the cherry tree is in bloom.

around 900 years ago.

In the 16th century the world famous very first tea master
Sen-No-Rikyu created Tencha (the traditional Japanese tea ceremony).

At that time the tea was permitted only to be drunk by high ranking Lords and courtiers.

The Japanese refined drinking the powdered tea so that it became an elaborate manifestation of Zen buddhism.

The more superficial aspects are the physical acts of the tea ceremony and exchanges of hospitality

and appreciation whereas the spiritual side (cha-no-yu) concerns Zen practice and the quest for a pure state of mind.

RANKS OF KOICHA TEAS ARE :

TENJYU天授-> CYOAN長安->EIJYU永寿->

BASIC BABY LEAF FROM NEW TEA TREES
Thin tea is served after a sweet cake (kashi) and is prepared differently from the thick tea.

Two bamboo scoops of tea are added to the bowl (after being sifted through a metal sieve to eliminate any lumps in the tea).

The goal is to briskly whisk the tea into a froth (15-20 strokes).

RANKS OF USUCHA TEAS ARE :

WAKO和光->YUGEN又玄->CHIGINOSHIRO千木の白->ISUZU五十鈴->AOARASHI青嵐

     Yuzu-Lemon plant.

Yuzu is a Japanese citrus lemon that is valued for its highly  aromatic rind.

Because the yuzu is considered a citron, the juice is very minimal, thus often expensive.

Outside of a few Asian cuisines and particularly in Japanese cultural circles, yuzu is seldom grown or used because it’s rather rare.

Used in both green and more ripe, yellow forms Yuzu is one of the few citrus in the world that is able to maintain its tart/sourness at high cooking temperatures.

    What is Yuzen?

Silk-weaving families can be traced to the 15th century in the famous Nishijin weaving center of Kyoto where elegant fabrics worn by the emporer and the aristocracy were produced.

In the 17th century, designs on textiles were applied using stencils and rice paste in the yuzen or paste resist method of dyeing.

The yuzen method provided an imitation of aristocratic brocades which were forbidden to commoners by sumptuary laws.

    What is Gyokuro-White Tea?

Gyokuro (Japanese: 玉露, "jade dew") is a type of shaded green tea from Japan. It differs from the standard sencha (a classic unshaded green tea) in being grown under the shade rather than the full sun. Gyokuro also differs from another shaded tea called kabusecha (lit., "covered tea"), in the length of time it undergoes the final growth under the shade (gyokuro is shaded for approximately three weeks, while kabusecha is shaded for approximately one week).

The name "gyokuro" translates as "jewel dew" (or "jade dew", referring to the pale green colour of the infusion). While most sencha is from the Yabukita cultivar of Camellia sinensis, gyokuro is often made from a specialised variety such as Asahi, Okumidori, Yamakai, and Saemidori.

The name comes from the product name given to the tea by the Yamamotoyama Tea Company's sixth owner, Yamamoto Kahei, in 1835. The process was completed by another manufacturer at the start of the Meiji period.

Gyokuro is one of the most expensive types of sencha available in Japan.
