What was the origin of the Sakura-cherry tree appreciation festival in Japan ?

It is said that the origin of "Hanami”, the Sakura-cherry tree appreciation festival, started in the Nara Period when ornamental plum trees from China were introduced into Japan for the nobility.
Then, from the Heian period, the object of admiration changed from the plum tree to the cherry tree.
The Shogun (Lord) Tokugawa Yoshimune planted cherry trees all over what was then called Edo (Tokyo today).
His purpose in encouraging cherry blossoms was to eliminate the frustration of ordinary people in their everyday lives
by lifting individuals souls with their beauty, and this benefit continues in today's
modern world.
Japanese people today often have an emotional attachment to the cherry blossom because it reminds them of the time of school graduation (normally in March) when the cherry tree is in bloom.

The Nuriki tea Company philosophy is, because they believe in being environmentally friendly and are completely health conscious, they are totally committed to growing only teas which are "Dear to the Earth" and good for your health.

This Eco-farm was featured in a broadcast by N.H.K. because of their total eco-farming concept.

In May you will see the "Hotaru" (firefly) at the Nuriki farm....
It is so rare to see them these days.

"Sumire" (small violets) are growing in their fields which encourage bees and this,
in turn, helps circulate eco-farming.

KYOTO-UJI
MARUKYU KOYAMAEN
ORGANICALLY GROWN MATCHA
- SINCE 1688

It is well known that Marukyu-Koyamaen stands for the highest quality standard.
Marukyu-Koyamaen now ranks among the foremost producers of fine teas in Japan.

The first tea tree was planted and cultivated in Uji- Tahara province in Kyoto
around 900 years ago.

In the 16th century the world famous very first tea master
Sen-No-Rikyu created Tencha (the traditional Japanese tea ceremony).

At that time the tea was permitted only to be drunk by high ranking Lords and courtiers.

     Yuzu-Lemon plant.

Yuzu is a Japanese citrus lemon that is valued for its highly  aromatic rind.

Because the yuzu is considered a citron, the juice is very minimal, thus often expensive.

Outside of a few Asian cuisines and particularly in Japanese cultural circles, yuzu is seldom grown or used because it’s rather rare.

Used in both green and more ripe, yellow forms Yuzu is one of the few citrus in the world that is able to maintain its tart/sourness at high cooking temperatures.

    What is Yuzen?

Silk-weaving families can be traced to the 15th century in the famous Nishijin weaving center of Kyoto where elegant fabrics worn by the emporer and the aristocracy were produced.

In the 17th century, designs on textiles were applied using stencils and rice paste in the yuzen or paste resist method of dyeing.

The yuzen method provided an imitation of aristocratic brocades which were forbidden to commoners by sumptuary laws.

    What is Gyokuro-White Tea?

Gyokuro (Japanese: 玉露, "jade dew") is a type of shaded green tea from Japan. It differs from the standard sencha (a classic unshaded green tea) in being grown under the shade rather than the full sun. Gyokuro also differs from another shaded tea called kabusecha (lit., "covered tea"), in the length of time it undergoes the final growth under the shade (gyokuro is shaded for approximately three weeks, while kabusecha is shaded for approximately one week).

The name "gyokuro" translates as "jewel dew" (or "jade dew", referring to the pale green colour of the infusion). While most sencha is from the Yabukita cultivar of Camellia sinensis, gyokuro is often made from a specialised variety such as Asahi, Okumidori, Yamakai, and Saemidori.

The name comes from the product name given to the tea by the Yamamotoyama Tea Company's sixth owner, Yamamoto Kahei, in 1835. The process was completed by another manufacturer at the start of the Meiji period.

Gyokuro is one of the most expensive types of sencha available in Japan.
